Care
Proceedings
Miss B was a single parent with a 7 year old son.
She became involved in a relationship with a much
older man who introduced her to drugs. Her care
of her son quickly deteriorated, so that he would
miss school often and was observed by relatives
and neighbours as appearing undernourished and neglected.
The Social Services Department became involved and
tried to help but Miss B was unable to give up drugs
and the situation deteriorated to the extent that
her son was removed from her and placed in foster
care.
Miss B was desperate, it was not until the child
had been removed that she realized the consequences
of her behaviour. She promised to do anything to
get him back. We represented Miss B in the legal
proceedings started by the Social Services Department
who planned that the child should remain in long
term foster care, or possibly be placed for adoption.
We were able to persuade the court that Miss B deserved
another chance and arranged for her and the child
to attend a residential home where she could relearn
her parenting skills and be helped to become independent
of drugs. Miss B worked very hard and succeeded
in staying drug free for over a year. At the final
hearing the court decided her son should remain
with her, subject to some supervision by the Social
Services Department. She was delighted that she
had been given another chance to bring up her son.
